Farmall 140 6 volt wiring harness

I have a 1958 Farmall 140 (original 6 volt system) that my wife and parents bought for my son and I last year as a birthday present. While it will never be a "perfectly restored" tractor I want to keep it as nice as possible and in solid functional shape. The wiring harness was painted at some time in the past before I got the tractor and the outer insulation/wire loom (cloth tubing??) is missing and rotted in places whick worries me that I'll get a short at some time and encounter major problems.

I'm looking for suggestions on how to go about making my own wiring harness as close to the original as possible. Wire gauge? Wire loom type and diameter? Wire color (red?, black?, etc.)? Connector types? Tips and hints you've learned from making your own harness?

I figure it would be a good winter project so that I have it ready and replaced by next spring.

Any help and insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

The loom material of choice is plastic split corrugated tubing. It slips on over the existing wires, One way to do this is to label all wire ends with a wire labeling tool (number each terminal end, and number each terminal) take photos as you remove the harness (not to tough,). Then place it on a board and staple the ends down. Place a push pin where every corner or branch is sprouting. Split what ever remains of the cotton loom, and remove it.
Colors will be evident, as will length of each wire.
Use quality NAPA or professional terminal ends, and solder them then shrink tube each.
When done, use the split tubing to cover them, and tape the connections in the tubing with electrical tape. Jim

Consider just buying a new harness, part 370816R91. This site and Porch Electric both list it for around $85. By the time you buy each color and gauge wire required, proper ends, loom etc. you may not save much by doing it yourself. If you are going to buy full spools and make a bunch of them, you might save something.
