49 H hydraulics, again.

Awhile back I posted a message asking about a problem I was having with my new to me H lifting my haybine. Everyone was very helpful and we figured out the problem in short order. So now on to the new problem: Yesterday I was mowing hay and had done several acres when I engaged the hydraulics to lift the mower. It raised up just fine but fell right back down. When I looked at the liftall pump I could see that the gasket that seals the casting that the hyd. outlets thread into, to the liftall housing had blown out. This was a brand new gasket that I had made from gasket material that comes on a roll at parts stores. My question is could I have used matieral that was too thick? I also thought that since this is on the part that holds pressure when the system is engaged, is it possible that this gasket should bet metal? Any thoughts are much obliged.

Soft paper gasket and use a mill file to make sure the 2 surfaces are clean & flat. Hold the file in both hands and use it as a draw file (push away & pull back). Not much pressure on the file since you are just checking for flatness & getting rid of old gasket material.
Be sure to fully tighten the attaching bolts!

I believe Wayne is basically on track. I would add that draw filing is done with the file handle in your left hand, and that the file only cuts when being drawn toward you, lifted after the stroke to start a new one. It can remove material very quickly, so be judicious, cleaning not machining.
The Dark grey gasket paper for high pressure applications about .020 to.030" thick is a great choice. I would use Copper Coat spray on both sides letting it air dry till almost tack free. Look up the torque spec on that sized bolts in inch pounds and use it. Best of luck, it is not a failure prone spot. Jim
