The PTO on our 856 stopped working. We found the problem in the internal linkage that engages/disengages the PTO. The problem is that we can't get to the inside of the PTO assembly to fix it. Does anyone know how to get the outer cover off? We got the entire assembly out, but can't get that cover off to get to the inards. Thanks.

You don't have to take the pto apart to get the
linkage apart. The spool comes out the bottom plug
after removing the top link and nut etc. To get the
rear plate off the pto, you start on the front side
and take the pump, clutch discs and drum off first.
Requires compressing springs with special or made up
tools to get snap rings off.

We did get the linkage out, but half came out of the bottom and half from the top. The missing pin in the middle being the problem. There seems to be no way to put that pin in except from the inside of the whole assembly. If it's that involved to get it off, I'll be taking it to the dealer. Thanks.

If you are talking about that little bitty pin that
either shears off or falls out , you assemble it and
then insert valve from the bottom. Probably better
look at a break down to get all parts back where
they belong as there are shims, spacers, little
washer etc that go in from the top and need to be
correctly installed. Only valve and plug from
bottom, no need to go inside pto.
