Missing date code on 123 engine?

I have a 1968 140(38383 J)with the heavy fount end, foot throttle and tack. Ser.#118312 on the engine. Has a casting of 387825 R2. I have looked for the date code on both side of the engine and have came up with nothing. Did some come out without a date code? Pic. I have found on here they are to the left of the firing order. Curious mind. Thanks

If the engine block has been replaced with a factory part (i.e. not a transplant from another tractor), it may not have a date code on the replacement casting.

At least, that is what I think I remember reading one time somewhere...

I would be very surprised at a 140 block without a date code. The code markings tended to migrate from place to place on some parts. It might even be inside.
