Farmall SC brake seal leaking

Evening,

I have a Super C with the left brake seal that leaked, sat for a long time, and ruined the pads. So, I will get new pads for both sides. However, I have the cover, actuators, 2 discs out. How do you pry off the inside friction plate and brake interior housing carefully? Shims? Do I need to pull both off the change the seal or just one? Will the shaft drop once the plate is removed? Love some advice on how to do this job.

Thanks

That plate is not removable from the outside without first removing the Bull gears in the final drives and pulling the rear axles out. Do not pry or force on the plate EVER. It will break and require dramatic expensive repair. The seal can be removed from the outside by prying or with drive screws put through the metal then pried with a flat bar ETC. Look up brake seal in the archives for more detail. It is the same for SH and SM tractors (different size, same stuff. Jim

On the Super C the seal for the bull pinion shaft is housed in a separate carrier which fits inside the bearing quill. You only need to remove the outer flange which contains the seal. There is an "O" ring on the boss of the carrier which may cause some resistance when levering them out. It is six years since I renewed the seals on my tractor but don"t remember experiencing any difficulty in removing the carriers. Sid.

The bull pinion retainer, on SC &SH, is easy to remove without getting into the trans. It's the regular H and I suspect the regular C that you have to get into the trans. I have done an H,SH,&SC.

The "inside friction plate"/brake pad has no retainer just pry it off. Clean the splines thoroughly. The brake pad discs need to be able to move freely on those splines.

The "brake interior housing" is called the "bull pinion retainer" These may need to be machined if they are too grooved.

To remove the bull pinion retainer I use 3 small chisels in 3 different locations around the retainer, look for the indents to put chisels in. Tap them in a little at a time till it comes out. If you tap in too far you risk breaking it and or binding. It's a 5 minute job getting it off.

No shaft to drop.

Once you have the retainer off the bull pinion gear can be easily removed, just pulls out, to clean the splines. I tape up gear, bearing, and seal surface in a plastic bag and blast the splines in the blast cabinet.

Search the archives as there is a lot of good info.

Cedric and Dean,

Thanks so much for the advice. I will get it off on Sunday and take care of the job. Just wanted to be sure before I did something stupid.
