F-20 Behlen Removal

I bought an F-20 for parts from a friend. It has a Behlen Road Gear. Part of the deal is I remove it so he can install it in his tractor.

I have the box and gears all off. But I wonder if the transmission shafts go with the Behlen Road Gear. Especially the top shaft. The snout that the little sliding on top gear goes on, appears longer and bigger than the standard shaft.

What all goes with this to install it on a different tractor that didn't have it.

Thanks in advance.

There is a splined sleeve that slides on the top tranny shaft that the little sliding gear slides on, this sleeve goes with the overdrive, but none of the shafts.

Thanks for the reply Kirk.

Now, how do you get this sleeve off? Is it pressed on or is there a snap ring or something holding it on? I tried to pull it off and it don't seem to move. Maybe just years of cooked on grease.

Thanks again.

There are two styles, but I believe they work the same way. The extension should have a threaded portion that a bolt fits into and pulls the whole extension off. The second version has a wierd 6 spline piece that locks the shaft to the extension and fits on the inside of the extension itself. The extension (outside) then also acts as the bearing retainer nut as well. Most likely you have the first version.

This is an F-30 but should be similar, if you have this version you take the snap ring out and pull the center part out of the splined shaft, and then the outer splined shaft that the gear goes on, will turn off counterclockwise, just like the nut that it took the place of on the trans shaft. If you look at the other tractor you will be putting it back on it should be fairly obvious.

Rob,

Thank you very much!! This is exactly what I needed.

I had the snap ring off last night but didn't know I was looking at the end of the inner sleeve that was threaded. I thought that was the shaft. We don't have the other tractor apart so I didn't know there were big threads near the housing.

Anyway, I ran a 1/2" bolt in and was able to use it as a puller to remove the inner sleeve. Then the outer sleeve just spun off as you said.

Thanks you very much!!
Brian
