460 power takoff

Using 460 on auger started throwing oil out of breather can i just put a plug in this until we get done? Will this take seal out around pto shaft.

Probably slipping and overheating (guess)Back off the auger load and see what happens. blowing the seals or toasting it makes no sense. Jim

Don't plug it, just take the oil level plug out of the side and let it drain down to it's normal level and it will most likely be fine until you have time to pull pto and replace input shaft seal.

I would do just like Pete 23 said. The seal between the transmission and PTO unit is going bad. Drain out the excess oil in the PTO unit. Might take a long time to come out the overflow again. Had the same problem on my 450-D. Replacing the seal fixed the problem. Al

I agree with both of you. If it is not heating/slipping, go for the drain. Also keep the dif fluid full. Jim

They call it a breather for a reason... If the breather hole were meant to be plugged, it would be plugged, and it would be called a "fill hole."

Ideally you drain the excess out of the PTO unit and dump it back into the transmission through the access plate on the deck. However, the oil will probably get dirty running down the side of the PTO, so it's probably best to dispose of the drained oil and replace with new.
