deleted rotary light switch , hooked direct regulator to amp gauge , to bat. does not show charge . am told with cutout system , i need to place resistor on reg. field terminal and gen. field wire to the resistor thus acting as a cutout.have seen such item in picture stands vertical on field terminal like a pencil . and field wire fastens to it , thus taking the place of the field control of the rotary switch . appreciate any help on this . can not find suitable resistor for this task . THANK YOU

Why delete the sw they have been around for 60 pluss yrs and will work just fine everything must be grounded and wired correct. Do you need the original sw?

RESISTORS ON BACK OF SWITCH WERE BROKEN . HAVE HAD A MECHANIC TROUBLE SHOOT IT , AM TOLD RESISTOR ON REGULATOR WOULD CORRECT THE PROBLEM AND ALLOW GEN . TO CHARGE .

The resistor does no take the place of the cutout. It controls the rate of charge and is hooked in series with the field windings. If you have original style cutout , it has a resistor mounted on it that was for tractors with starter but no lights so therefore had no light switch. Permanent low charge when hooking field to resistor. Arm terminal on gen to arm terminal (gen) on cutout. Battery terminal on cutout to ammeter, field terminal on gen to ground for high charge and to resistor for low charge.

do not have original cut out . am using 4 terminal regulator ,L ,BAT. F on one side and GEN on other side . did away with rotary switch and need something to do the same task that the rotary switch did controling the field in a cut out system

If you now have a 4 terminal (BAT FLD LOAD GEN/ARM) Voltage Regulator IT REGULATES FIELD CURRENT AND YOU NO LONGER USE ANY SORT OF THE OLD LHBD LIGHT SWITCH WIRED TO THE GENNY.

BAT on VR to load (NOT battery/starter) side of ammeter.

LOAD on VR now feeds hot battery voltage up to lights and ignition INSTEAD OF THEM BEING FED OFF THE LOAD SIDE OF AMMETER AS WITH A CUTOUT SYSTEM

FLD ON VR wires to FLD on Genny (NO more wire from FLD on genny up to light switch)

GEN/ARM on VR wires to ARM on genny

The VR needs a good ground to work

Heres my non charging Troubleshooting Procedure

thank you very much for your help . I already have what i need then . I just need to change the wires as i thought L was for lights . my mistake .

Norman - If you have a 4 terminal regulator installed, the field resistor on the LHDB switch is no longer being used. The resistor's function is now accomplished automatically by the regulator.

The other resistor on the LHDB switch (the heavier one) was the dimmer resistor for the headlights. Unless you still wish to have a "dim" setting for the headlights it is not needed either. A simple on/off switch to control the headlights will work fine!

Well, L is for lights in a way, it stands for LOADS which is lights AND ignition etc. Without the L terminal, those same loads are fed instead from the Load (NOT battery) side of the ammeter. If it had a cutout and loads were fed off the ammeter, that wire would be removed and replaced with a wire instead from LOAD on the VR up to the light or ignition switch to provide the voltage

Boy you are off base in those charging systems the lites worked off the original sw you must be thinking about the other system where no battery was in the system.

If you had no lights, you had no light switch but you could still have a starter and need to recharge the battery so therefore you used the resistor on the cutout for full time low charge rate.
