H leaking oil

My 46 H has had an oil leak from an access plate under the belly for some time but I noticed today that"s it"s more of a steady drip than an a slow leak. I"ve never opened this plate, which is just in front of the belly pump as I"m not much of an engine mechanic. What would be the common sources of this leak and how difficult would it be to repair? I realize this is a vague question but I hope some of you experts out there can head me in the right direction. Thanks.

Depends on the type of oil being released. The rear main engine seal can be leaking black engine oil. The front seal for the rear end could be leaking forward. Could be hydraulic fluid too.

Under that pan may be a belly pump if the tracctor was so equiped, there is a drive line that goes through the rear housing to the transmission. The most common leak is the seal where it goes into the transmission,it could also be the seal for the belly pump if you have one.
The driveshaft comes apart with three bolts, you are then able to turn the collar at the back out and pick out the seal and replace it with a new one..if you have a belly pump you have a bit of work to remove it,if you don't have one an hour and a half should change the leaking seal out..not a bad job, more complex if you have a belly pump to remove..in any case remove the pan and you will be able to see which ,if not both seals are leaking..common on H's,I've had to do both of mine

I would bet most of would be black. Like everyone said it could be hydraulic, engine or transmission.

I would pull the cover, wash out good in there with a power washer, then see where it is coming from. Mine had leaked so long and in so many places I could not tell until I cleaned it up some. The oil tends to get slung all over from the rotating shafts.

Black oil will be a rear main on the engine leaking. It could eventually saturate your clutch and begin slipping as well. If its a substantial leak as you say, I would make plans for a repair soon.

I think you will need to split tractor if it is a rear main. I did mine and it is dry as a bone now.
