400 vs 450 parts interchange

I think the answer to my question is yes, but I wanted to ask folks smarter than me if the 400 and 450 rear end/pto drive sections (center) are the same. (assuming they are both T/A delete)I am talking about from the clutch housing back.

The best answer is probably. The caseih.com site has parts listings for both. Checking part numbers will be of value as some components may have been upgraded in strength or specifications to deal with more power. Jim

The biggest difference is the bore size of the engine. The rest is the color, other things like steering wheel.

Looking at some data OEM published,it shows the 400 AND the 450 BOTH being built in 1956.Is this correct????

That is a question I have always had on my mind. Were the 450s made out of alot of 400 "leftovers" at the factory????

A 450 is just a updated 400. Few updates on Fast hitch,Exhaust manifold, Basiclly Cosmetic updates for marketing. Tony

Regular production farmall 450 tractors were made the last 2 months of 1956. Both 400 and 450 tractors had small upgrades or changes during there production runs. Tractors are mostly the same basic chassis with some changes along the way. 400 tractors used C264 and D264 engines with engine serial numbers a continueation of the 264 engine serial numbers starting with SM tractors. 450 tractor and engine serial numbers started with 501. Last engine blocks used in 400 tractors was the same casting number as a 450 engine block. With original ones having 264-400 or 281-450. Engine wise officially the last 400 and the first 450 made only differed in piston and sleeve size and maybe the manifold on gasoline, but the manifolds may have changed shortly before C281. Chassis had changes like the rear steer support, From key to key with push button start Extra holes to turn 2 extended selector shaft hydraulic valves from single to double acting without sheet metal removal if 3 valve equiped. Rear light and support moved from right side of the battery box 400 to left side 450. This next change could cause problems for the original poster if parts are mismatched. 450 farmall tractors have a different clutch pedal, clutch operating rod going from the pedal and if equiped with a T/A a different T/A clutch operating shaft.
Other changes or changes from the first 400 to last 450 or upgrades to both would take a lot of space and time. If a specific question about some parts is made I will try to answer.
Also a 400 was the same basic chassis as a SMTA with a smaller fuel tank on all but some of the later ones. Engine changes for more power, Hydraulics that robbed just a little more power and a smaller fuel tank, and Lots of farmers were not to happy with fuel usage when the 400 tractors came out.

They are pretty interchangable, few updates on bearings ,seals, etc
As for T.A. delete ,All that means to me is that someone did not want to repair t.a. took it out and replaced with a t.a delete shaft. Tony

The interface between the engine and rear section, at the bell housing, is EXACTLY the same between the two tractors.

You can mate a 400 engine to a 450 rear, or vice versa.

If you look carefully, you'll notice the M, Super M, Super MTA, 400, and 450 are all very closely related. You can bolt the front half of any one of these to the rear half of any other, in fact. All you might need to do is change the pressure plate on the flywheel if you're going to put an M front on a TA-equipped rear.

The biggest problem would be the fast hitch, early 400 had a different deck & hyd cyl mount, also the linkage to control it. You would have to swap the deck if it that type.

Yes, use a 48957DE head gasket from CNH, make sure the valves are for the head, LP or Gas or Distillate or Kerosene, (length issue), last replacement new cyl head that IH made came complete with valves, it fit all gas M/SM/SMTA/400/450.

Didn't some of the 450 tractors if not all have the same top cover with the mounting holes as a 400? They did move the rear light to the left side of the battery box and it would be in the way of the FH without traction control lift arm and bracket. I'm thinking a 58 model 450 I had still was the same cover type. Could be mistaken though, can't remember enough.
