Need weight estimate on a 55T baler

Wardner,
According to the 55 series Pickup Baler sales brochure, the 55T with the IH engine is 4,680 pounds. The PTO version is 3,972 pounds and the Electrall drive version is 4,194 pounds.

How dumb is that? The specs in the OM don't give a weight. Dimensions, power requirements.... no weight. A few neat pictures of the Electrall motor. Speaking of, I do know where there's a matched set of drive belts for that motor. Also, would you like a copy of the manual?

I do have one question about the Electrall, while I have your eye. Can they be rebuilt/rewound to push out more juice?

Mike

Crazy,

I have the dealer set-up manual and a parts book. Sure, I would like the OM. Let me know what you want for it. Mail to:

If I can ever get a deal done, I will need the belts. One guy says he no longer has his baler and the other guy thinks he can scrap his for $600. He has some sort of off-again/on-again deal that's contingent on the other guy tearing down his barn for the boards. I have a feeling. he won't be able to load the baler but we haven't even got that far yet.

I am not an electrical geek. I do know that the Electrall is a farm service generator and is conservatively rated. Peak power according to IH literature is 30% over the 10KW rated power. It is a large framed unit and probably could be rewound for more capacity at the expense of longevity or reliability.

Thanks Don,

Surprised it is so heavy. I was thinking about 3000 lbs with the power unit. But what do I know? I have never done any baling.

Big weight means good equipment to turn it on its side and load it on my trailer. It also raises the asking price when I have to compete with the scrap man.

how hard would it be to remove the engine and ship separately or sell on site before the baler even leaves? It would save some weight and valuable shipping space (also oil, coolant concerns if tipped to ship). If there aren't any parts you're concerned about included with the engine assembly to make the electral work, it might be wise to treat the engine as disposable (profitable).

Wardner, How far is it from home? Friend of mine bought one on the coast and towed home approx 250 miles. He lost the knotter cover on the road. Had it restored in three mounths and at our show last April, everything worked. Tony

Balers are heavy. I was going to guess close at 6000 lbs. Years ago I towed an old New Holland with a Datsun pickup. I could pull it but I couldn't stop.

Karl,

Not too concerned about the shipping weight; just the loading weight. Most here have suggested that it should ship with the flywheel down, similar to its original factory shipping. I assume the power unit is easily separated and could go into the truck body with minimal fuss. But I would be willing to negotiate a deal that left the power unit behind.

Redgems,

Between 700 and 800 miles. OH to MA. The Interstate system is posted (at least in MA) for no farm equipment on its own wheels.

I did once drive a 15 ton forklift about 30 miles on I-495 in the breakdown lane. Even got passed by a state trooper. Had an escort and repair plates.

Wardner,
I can send the manual to your email, it's already in PDF. We can work out the details of payment when you get it. ;v) The belts are on standby if you need them. I have two sets.

I still can't believe the Electrall only pushes 10KW. It looks like you should be able to power a small subdivision with those things. That's why I was asking if they could be rewound, but it sounds like a case of, "if it ain't broke...".

Good luck on securing a 55 baler. This neighborhood ran out of 45, 50 & 55-T & -W's a long time ago. My Grandpa had a 45 that he used with his H, but it's long gone too. I might get one if the price is right & it still has a lot of paint. Not planning on using it, though. Those balers are over-glorified hay manglers. The knotters were there for decoration.

If you can't get a baler, IH had a Electrall motor on a 64 or 76 pull-type combine, too. Maybe it was a 62.

If you can't agree on the payment, he can email it back to you. :)

Your potential transactions are too far away for me but I know others have been posting inquiries about sources for c-123 engines/blocks on this site fairly frequently of late.
