My Farmall 460 start quite well when cold but when warmed up it starts hard and blows white smotk out the stack for about 5 minutes than clears up. Anyone know what this might be caused by?

Also, is a 460 a gas hog? I am cutting my CRP grass with a small brush hog and am burning about 5 gallons per hour. Ouch???????

I take its a gas tractor? Those IH gassers liked the gas-thirsty.At full load,My super m will do that ,too.

If your tractor is making white smoke after being warmed up, Take this little test.
First check if it is loosing coolant.
Next, run it with the radiator cap loose until warm. Then do the restart situation to see if it still smokes. If not. it is probably a coolant leak into the cylinder/s. No pressure in the system reduces the forcing of coolant into the cylinders, and thus reduces the smoke. Jim

also look at your motor oil and coolant, creamy looking motor oil or muddy looking coolant, also while running with the rediator cap off look for bubbles being pushed up into you coolant...

If you determine you have no compression or coolant leak then i would check ignition components and timing. 5 gallons an hour seems a bit much to me. we round bale with our 460 gas and i dont think it uses that much fuel. if your timing is off or your ignition is getting weak you may not be burning up all the fuel in the cylinders once it gets warmed up.
