Working on a friends 1956 400 rear outside wheel bearing. Seems to be original and pressed on -- is there a trick or special tool to pull this bearing?

You can pull that bearing from the outside, but I never felt it was worth the time of fighting it. I drain, pull pto, take off cap screw, put a forcing screw and spacer between bull gears , turn axle with pipe wrench and push axle out. Then you can push bull gear out of the way and check that inner brg also which is the one that goes to heck most of the time anyway.

Thanks Pete
can you give me more detail on the "forcing screw and spacer between bull gears" or better yet would you have a diagram from a manual -- I'm headed back out to the job tomorrow to give er another shot.
Thanks

As you no doubt don't intend to do this often, just use the bolt holding bull gear on and find correct length spacer and put between it and other side bull gear. You may have to add some extra spacer as there won't be enough threads to push axle completely out of bearing. Hold bolt head with wrench and turn axle.
