Need advice for indexing spark plugs. Pics included

Super A engine is coming along nicely. We have found out that a 140 crankshaft will work with a Super A if you cut the threaded part off. That may or may not have been necessary, but with the threaded part off the crank the Super A pulley was an exact fit to the 140 crank.

We're using domed pistons. We had to mill the head and the block. The pistons clear the valves just fine. Not certain about spark plugs. It looks tight. Do any of you have any advice on indexing the plugs, or is there some kind of plug that I'm not hip to that will work.

Thanks,

Grape

That's a c123 engine - did they use those in super a's???

I thought they started those in the 100's.

No?

I'm probably wrong - but curious.

I can help you with this one!

I am guessing you are REALLY looking for ALL the performance you can get here??(Are you pulling???:)

You want the electrode tip pointing down towards the piston.Mark the side of the plug where the electrode comes out with a marker on the porcelin so you can see it when you screw it in.(So you can tell it is "UP" when threaded in.)
You are either going to need ALOT of plugs to try and get this to work out(NOT practical!) OR get some copper washers in .010 .020 and .030 increments to "shim" the plug until it indexes with the tip pointing down.
E-mail if any questions.

I want to add.

It seems like you are MORE worried about CLEARANCE of the electrode???

I know you can find equivilent plugs in a shorter reach electrode, but if the STOCK ones are clearing, use them!If you need a fraction of clearance, you can shim with copper washers to a small degree.

I have found a good supply of plugs helps too.
If I try enough of them I can get the electrode pointing the way I want it.

Super A's did have 123 c.i. motors although I don't think the block numbers on my block were the same block numbers used on a Super A.

There are a lot of interchangeable parts for the Super A all the way to the 140.

I believe I have done something that has never been done before nor did anyone know if it would work. By that I mean using a 140 crank for a Super A pulley.

There are 3 different tractors that make up my engine in the pics, a 130 block, Super A head and rods, 140 crankshaft and 140 cam. I can tell you that they all fit just fine.

As CKNS indicated, the Super A-1, a rare bird only made in 1954, has the C123 engine.

This was Hugh Mckay's favorite subject. He would've schooled us all on the whole offset Farmall thing. I kinda miss the guy.

That's one think I really like about this site - it lets people document stuff like this so it can be searched and used by somebody else.

Great that people make the effort.

What Mike said is correct. You can go on line to JEGS high proformance web site and they have kits for indexing plugs. I have used them many times and they are easy to use. Just have to take your time.

Very useful Rick, I have found what I need. Thank you too Mike!

Thanks pal,
