New Starter Question

I just started shopping around for a new starter for a Super A.

I see a wide price range online.

I see some new ones for 125, free shipping.

Then there's a local guy here selling rebuilt starters for 220.

(core charges aren't a factor here)

Anything I should be looking out for? Like cheap chinese knockoffs?

It's hard to ignore a $100 savings, but I don't want to be penny wise, pound foolish either.

Things like starters I do my best to buy local if I can so as to have a way to go back if it does not last or is bad from the get go. As for the price most I have seen that you can depend on will be in the $200 range. Also have you checked this site and there prices most of the time they are a tad bit cheaper then the other guys but then shipping can cause trouble and a price jump

thanks for responding.

yeah, this site has them for about 160 with shipping... not bad, but...

Here's one on ebay for 116, free shipping:

Business is real slow these days, and getting slower. So money's tight!

Just wondering if anybody has bought one of these, and if there's any reason to stay away.

thanks

Flea bay run do not walk away from it if money is tight because you stand a good chance it might start the tractor well if you pull it with another tractor. I trust stuff from flea bay far far as I can throw one of my tractors

I bought a starter for an H Farmall last week from a local automotive electric dealer. Paid 200 for it and it has busted twice in the first week - made in India. Dealer said he cannot even get a new one made in the USA, only rebuilt for $300.

That's kind of what I was wondering - if there's a reason a rebuilt one is so much more than a brand new one...

I had bought a "New" starter rather than rebuilt, but had problems with it, got another New replacement & had the same problem, wouldn't always en-gauge after the initial start. Found a major manufacturing defect- it was made in India!. Anyway, when it started, it spun the gear back & would get stuck/ hung up on a poorly machined part at the rear of the shaft. Drove me nuts till I figured what the problem was, so if you still have your starter, might be just as well getting it rebuilt ! AL

Take yours to a local starter shop and have it rebuilt.Finding a good shop might not be easy.

We have a couple good ones in Southeast Missouri.

I rebuilt my first starter when I was 14 years old, using an article from Popular Mechanics as a guide. Worked fine in my 40 Ford coupe for 5 years until I sold it for a 49 Merc. It really ain't rocket science. Even James Dean did it. :)

I took my starter to a local shop and had them rebuild it rather than buy a new one. got it back with heavier duty parts than it went in with and it cost less than the new one.

Even if it cost more I'd still go there. The local guys are more apt to stand behind their work.

my 2 cents,
Mike

I'd just check the seller's feedback, particularly on any starters he"s sold. It's always a bit of a gamble, but if he's sold five dozen starters with no complaints they're likely O.K. If he's sold six and has three complaints, then...
