Something that yanks my chain...

Gotta love Ebay ads for old Farmall tractors, "Runs great, but needs carb cleaned." Soooo, if it runs great, then why does the carb need cleaned? Or the most common, "Restored". Well, you repainted it, but there was nothing done mechanically to actually restore it. So someone painted over the problems with a rattle can restoration.

yup, I can get on board with that. The one that gets me, is "Rare", "Extremely Rare", "won't find another one like this".

and they are talking about a Farmall H.

Yea,I can DEFINITELY get on board with that statement Dave!

I am getting tired of "price jacking" of certain parts that came on ALL H's and M"s being sold as "Rare" or "one off" .

I always love anything with the expression "...as far as I know...".

Engine runs great, as far as I know...

Which translates to: There's something wrong, but since I don't KNOW exactly what it is, I can hide behind the technicality that I stated "as far as I KNOW".

It's very similar to the "it ran fine when it was put away last year".

Which translates to "I know there's something wrong with it, but hey it was a year ago and I can't be expected to remember details like that, plus lots of things can go wrong when a tractor sits for a year, not my fault".

I always liked the auctioneers who would claim:

"It was runnin when it quit" or

"It was bought new"

But if the auctioneer bragged on how it had been overhauled etc Id respond " That wont hurt it, just sell it"

Its Caveat Emptor and if ya cant stand the heat get outa the kitchen as they say, I (past used tractor dealer) never put too much faith in what was said, I kicked the tires listened to em run checked em out and relied on my own judgment.

But "I'm sure it's an easy fix" and, oh by the way, better bring a battery if you want to hear it run.

"all complete, except for a few missing parts"

As for being very rare, one of a kine.....yup...only one ever built with that exact serial number!!!

Seems if you want to buy something, it's always very rare ( no matter what it is).......When you want to sell something...they always made a bunch of them.
I'll go with tire-kicking myself, been burnt a time or two.

You can't get much more honest than "it was running when it quit".

Kinda like "New Idea stands behind everything they make, except their manure spreaders".

I like "Farmall/IH XXXX engine ran good when parked", and they've stripped it to the short block. No manifolds, carb/fuel pump, spark plugs, ignition, nothing. well way to go, now it's going to take a bunch of tinkering to get it running good again!

And to listen to the auctioneer who gave our stuff away, you'd think we did torques and PTOs yearly.

saw one here in the east tx area, had picture of it, and the add said ran when last parked some 30 years ago! thought it was great.
