1953 F12516
1953 L501906
1954 F51977
1954 L600001

I go by YTs serial number list. You kind find it right over there on your left. It sounds like you have already checked out a serial number list.
Looks like it would be a 53 according to that. Your date codes could certainly be 1952, but it must have been assembeled in January(ish) of 53.

thanks for the info still lost on the CJ suffix .The production form from the farmall plant say numbers 15264 to 17362 made dec 52 could be wrong

her she is better pics coming

Built nov. 1952, 17364 was the first non diesel built in dec.
C indicates the tractor started out as LP fueled. If thats the case the engine serial # should have a suffix letter for LP also if original. J was for a rockford clutch equiped tractor.

sflem849 the SM serial # list for farmall built non diesel tractors is way off on the calendar year for the start of 1953. Its off for there fiscal year also.

o... Were sayin its a 52 that left factory LP fuel model? Gonna go get engine code tonite any thing else u guys need? Thanks for everything men!

What suffix should I find on the engine serial #?
I have two SM LP's, both are stage II.

I also finally brought home two SMTA LP's. Will post photos sooner or later.

On the SM, C for LP gas attachment standard altitude and N for LP gas 2500 feet up. Have saw a couple with no suffix on the engine and the engine was right to be original. Don't know if some failed to get stamped or a lucky engine switch. SMTA never had a code for LP that I know of. None was officialy made at farmall works, the ones sent from farmall to be converted usualy have a D or E suffix. They raised the comppresion with 5000 and 8000 feet altitude pistons.

Hey man, just using our forums data. Who has the right list?

In addition, is it true that all SMTAs are 54 model year but many were built in 1953 calander year?

Cool deal. I don't think anybody mentioned it yet, but it has the wrong battery box. "All" the supers had a box under the seat.

According to Guy Fay's "International Harvester Tractor Data Book" the SM's serial list is as follows:

Farmall
1952 501 - 12515
1953 12516 - 51976
1954 51977 - 52627

Louisville
1952 500001 - 501905
1953 501906 - 512541 or 512540
1954 512541 & up

IH started to new model years on Nov. 1

Well here is the paper work from the factory I trust it . all my cast codes are 52 so.. we have like three at 52 and three say 53 lol

By model yr I meant like 1953 model yr tractors were built starting Nov 1, 1952. Sorry if I confused you. Models were releaed at different times throughout the year, not necessarily at the beginning of the model year.

I have a '53 Stage 1 SM close to your serial no,too late to go out & look it up. It was built in Mar of '53 according to the production sheets. Castings were all made in Dec of '52 so have '52 casting dates. Nevertheless, it's a '53. I am 3rd owner of the tractor. Both owners were local & tractor was sold local. Castings & serial no plate are all original.

IH did not keep the best of records and there are some errors in them as there are in some serial number lists. I'm by no means an expert on the subject but Mr. Fay is one of the leading historians on IH tractors and has written several books on the subject and many IH collectors accept his publications as highly accurate.

soybeanjoe,Serial 12516 may be techinquelly correct for the start of farmall built tractors in 1953 but kind of misleading for the biggest percent of SM tractors. Notice I mentioned non diesel tractors in my other post, notice also on lblocks list that diesel tractor production was slowed or stopped before the end of the 1952 year. Records show SMDV 12516 carried over and the lowest # SM built up to march 53. If you want to go by fiscal year lblocks tractor could be called a 53, I don't get into that arguement so I just said when it was built nov. of 52. Most serial lists including the one you posted go by calender year.
If the SM you have is a regular gas one and built in march at the farmall plant it should have a serial # of 28111 or higher. First regular SM tractor built in jan. 53 was serial 21074

(quoted from post at 20:52:43 09/21/11) No sir look up 52 Super M Battery under tank changed in 53 sure of it.I wondered that my self

When did they make the switch to under the seat boxes?

When I said the serial list was wrong that was the wrong word to use, misleading is better. See my post to soybeanjoe.
Preproduction SMTA tractors would be the only ones in 1953. SMTA 60001 was built in the calender year 1954.

Hey soybean whats ur serial say ? how close ?Also i do not know when they swithed but my guess would be Jan 53.(the seats) i have the 53 and 54 charts as well if anybody wants em.
Thanks for everything Men

Im gonna go with it was built nov 52

Larry

Thanks Dave for the clarification. I was always under the impression that Mr. Fay's serial # list went by model year & not calendar year.
