Brake-Actuating Assembly

I have a 1952 Farmall Super M Louisville, both brake-actuating assembly's are bad from years of plowing and disking. I have had them lathed down to smooth them out, but they are beyond help and are starting to crack. Does anyone know where i can get ahold of any either new or used depending on quality of them. Thanks

Ebay, Most salvage yards, or Bates Equipment in Indiana. Many others, shop. The key is to get the stack of the expander and disks to measure .040" to .050" less than the outer case to inner surface distance when the expander is fully relaxed (balls in the lowest depth)
This will require machining of the outer housing mount surface, and careful measurement with a caliper, not a ruler. The balls/ramps should be lubricated with a dry teflon (PTFE)based spray, the same for the splines. The pivot points of the links can stand a touch of the same material. TRI-Flow is one brand. A 200 grit cleanup of the friction surfaces also allows them to break in easily. Jim

You can buy new replacement actuating assemblies now. I have replaced the ones on both my SH and SM with new they were better than ever! They are about $160 each...there are some on eBay and this website also sells them. Do a google search for "farmall brake actuating assembly" and you can probably find 100 other places that are selling them too.

I did what Jim is telling you here last month on my 53 Super. It works great now! (Be sure and to sand those friction surfaces like he says.Go ACROSS the faces,NOT in a circular motion. :)

If looking for used ones, SM,400 and 450 work.
IH changed the later ones to have a little more leverage when appling the brakes. They also recomended to check inside of the brake housing for clearance where the link straps go on the actuater. Grind if needed.
