Hi Can anybody nail down for me the make and year of an old IH
tractor I have:
The serial number is 2359425
Engine number 251341R8 and the casting code is L3

I seem to find info that says it is either a 1964 or 1975. I am trying
to replace the generator or is it an alternator?
Many thanks

First thing.....

PICTURES make a world of difference for all of us. That would be the quickest and easiest way for us to help you out. If you can upload some on here for us (or email them to me, and I will); that would be the best suggestion.

Secondly, if you know the model number, please tell us. If you are unsure, don't know, etc.; the pictures are the best bet. You never know if someone has changed sheetmetal over the years, or put a wrong set of decals on it. It happens more than you think.

We gotta know the model before we can dig deeper.

I have pics now, any help?

looks like a Cub. your casting code (atleast on the block) is 3-25-Y. Feel free to correct me if im wrong.

Thanks v much. So, if it's a cub, how can I narrow down the date
with the engine/serial numbers I have?

"Y" code is 1953. the serial numbers you have are actually part numbers.

this might help you a bit...

Hi again, I have taken these numbers off the tractor, which ones would indicate year of manufacture?

The casting date you gave was on the torque tube (bell housing), and one was on the block. They both have the "Y" code. The "Y" code was used both in 1953 and in 1975. Since in 1953 the Cub tractors were painted Red and had the Round Nose, it is not going to be one of those. In 1964 or 1965 they changed from the round nose to the square nose with the yellow & white paint scheme. With those facts I would be safe to guess it is a 1975 model (and has at least the original block and torque tube). You should look for more casting codes to see if the rest are the "Y" to see if its original.

One more thing to Double Check is the serial number. You posted the serial number tag with the number, and that is what we will look at. It will be the top number. From your number, it matches up to a 1975. So, it looks like that's what you got.

That is a 1975 Farmall Cub. The serial number is the key. It is way too high to be a 1953.

Since the hoods are interchangeable, it is possible that someone put the later 1975 style hood on a 1953 Cub.

It is possible that it could happen, however with the serial numbers and the casting codes matching; it is definitely a 1975 IH Cub
