Stumped - Magneto Timing

40 Farmall A - Timed H4 magneto by the owner"s manual. Engine started and ran 1 or 2 revolutions and quit. Confirmed cylinders getting gas and spark. Checked magneto timing again and found it was off (rotor contact straight up and not at no. 1). Punch marks are aligned for magneto-governor gear. Magneto rotor drive gears are aligned with flat tooth with the "R" on the large gear. What am I missing?
 
Maybe not enough clearance on the impulse coupler .Sometimes needs 2 mounting gaskets If the drive bearings are loose.
 
If the engine ran at all the timing is ok or it wouldnt even start. If you turn it over with the crank the rotor will stop at #1 position then fire remember it did run so the timing is ok or it wouldnt have started. There is no timing of the mags if the rotor is lined up on the tower when it fires its good to go and yours did run a little.
 
Gene and Earl - Thank you for the advice. I retimed the magneto step by step and the A is running now. I will slow down and do it right next time although I had fun today checking everything. Randy
