Farmall A 1940
On the bench the magneto fires from the coil each hit. I fires through cap on #1 and #4. It will not fire through #2 or #3. It is a new cap and rotor. There is conductivity through pose #2 & #3. Old cap and rotor had proplems too. This new rotor/cap ran for a while too, mowed an acre.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? Rick
 
Yes, new plug wires, rotor, cap. The odd thing is it fires each time out coil post from the mag. but won't go through the two terminals. would the condenser in the mag cause this?
 
I really don't know, but the shaft in the mag could be loose, it should have no or very little play in it. I have not experienced that, but read about others who found that as the cause of misfiring.
 
1-3-4-2 going clockwise on the cap as your looking at the plug wire side of the cap, right? If you go counter clockwise is sounds and acts just like you describe.
 
Your plug wires should be in this firing order on the cap.

4-3 rotates cw

Look at the lobes on your mag to make sure they're not worn and the points are opening. Hal
 
Is any damage visible to the new cap or rotor? Is the rotor firing tip turned to the side? Did you have the "gears" apart back where the rotor engages the dist shaft? If so, are they in time? Our A had the gears jump teeth one time, & the rotor would fire just as you describe. Worth a look.
 
Thanks for all the help. Timing was all ok. Wires cw in the correct order. Saw no issues with the new cap or rotor. Shimmed the rotor to fit tighter to the shaft. just used aluminum duct tape. Just right. But nothing corrected issue. Mag was firing out the coil each hit and firing our terminal 1 and 4. (180deg from each other) but would not fire on the opposite terminals. Tested the condenser, it was dead. put in an new condenser and now firing on all four terminals. Thanks, Rick
