560 Hand Crank?

Been working on a gas 560, and have worked on quite a few 460/560 diesels over the years. Always noticed they had the cutout in the front bolster for a crank. Can't imagine anyone would try tho crank one of these.

Was this ever offered, maybe not so much as a starting tool, but a way to turn over the engine for service work? Always wondered why the hole was there!

Yes it was offered. I had an AW7 Diesel with hand crank. If the battery was a bit down, it was possible to heat the glow plugs and then hand crank the motor to start it. Not a fun job though, you need very strong arms!

Did anyone ever offer a converson/adapter to put a usable diesel engine ia a 460 diesel?? After using the block heater for 1 hour with 2 new battrys [this spring] and a battry charger with a 300 amp boost im about fed up with my pice of rusty iron old stinky!!!! Bud.

Where are you at as I have always wanted a 460 diesel:)

On a side note, if you are having so many problems getting it started, why don't you buy a 560 diesel, or even an 806 with direct start. I know the 460's were hard starters even when new, but my 560 with good glow plugs will start (if I have to at zero degrees) just hold the glow plugs for 90 seconds, but I usually know when I am going to use it and have it plugged in.

Im about 9 and 1/3 miles east and 1 mile north of the center of lower Michigan.Runs and works great once you get it started and i think i need to get the starter checked for drag?? Bud.

Bud, what do you mean by usable diesel engine? The 460 uses the same glow plugs as the 560 and the 282 706 and with good glow plugs and proper starting procedure is a good starting tractor. If yours isn't, you need to check yours.

noda hope in hel_ of starting a 560 diesel with a crank! impossible, i have a factory crank for mine, but that is for use when setting pump timing, or adjusting valves.

Harold,I have checked and replaced glow plugs and both wireing harness and installed a block heater. My Ford pickup with the old 7.3 uses glow plugs so i understand them but?? After much money spent on the head, pump, injecters, and on and on the well is going dry.Not that i can't,at some point it's not worth the bother.I also owne a old Case 530 diesel backhoe which is much better than the 460! I think i'll have the starter checked and then either a gas int or?? Bud.

My 560 starts in 10 degrees F, by holding the glow plugs for 35 seconds. Your 460 should not start that hard. Are valves adjusted correctly? Does the glow plug circut pass the IH factory tests? Also, you can get massive amperage loss through the starter solenoid, via the contacts in the solenoid. You can take it apart and check; if it is original, they can be burned/corroded. Also be sure that your ground, connection is good. I have seen both scenarios cause much grief in diagnosis.
