340U hydraulic questions

Greetings folks. I just brought home a new-to-me '58 340U in pretty good shape. Had a couple of small leaks and today developed a large leak at the top of the steering.

From what I gather this power steering is hydraulic driven so I'm sure I'm safe in assuming this is a blown seal. Its really pouring from the steering shaft cover, but I was really working the FEL at the time. I'll get to pulling the thing apart on my next day off. if anyone has tips on the project they'd be greatly appreciated.

Also looking for details of a reservoir/pump located at the right front of the engine at the base of the distributor drive - hydraulic reservoir? This thing is bone dry on inspection but pristine inside with no residue. I bought an I&T manual but that thing is nearly worthless for a lot of this stuff, covering so many models and options.

Thanks in advance for any input. J.

You need a parts book, with the diagrams and numbers in it. It is also in the parts section of www.caseih.com. I don't remember a reservoir at the front next to the pump. There should be hoses/pipes running toward the rear to a reservoir. If the pump is dry and the tractor has been run for any time it is likely ruined. As to manuals, the I&T manual is a good supplement, but there is a group of IH Blue Ribbon service manuals that you need if you are going to do major work. In some ways the I&T manual is better than the IH manuals. Both are intended for people with basic mechanical knowledge, which you will gain as you do it.
