560G Timing help

I just had my carb and distributor redone, and after replacing, can't get 'er to fire up.

Is there a timing mark on the crankshaft pulley, or another one perhaps somewhere that doesn't involve me having to pull the hood and radiator to see the crankshaft pulley? Or any other tip that will make it easier to set the timing? I tried pulling plug 1, and using a wire to gauge the height, but that didn't do anything for me.

I found this tip on the ssb forum, and this makes sense to me, but I wanted to check with some more experienced hands if it will work.

"In other words , rotate dist until points are closed, then rotate dist opposite direction of shaft rotation until point just start to open and rotor pointing to number one. If it is not at number one on the cap, just call that spot number one and go with firing order counter clockwise around cap."

As always, thanks in advance!

yes on crankshaft pully.get #1 cyl. on compression and line up to 2 degree mark on pulley with pointer on timing cover.in stall rotor to #1 firing position on cap.turn key on and when you hear it spark as turning dist in opposite direction of rotation, thats exactly where you tighten it down.make sure your on the compression stroke though, you can tell by placing thumb over hole as cranking, it will be pushing compression out.

You should be able to get #1 at TDC by shining a light into the spark plug hole. But, your distributer has to be aligned with the oil pump. I don't have the details as it has been a while since I assembled my 460HU. It is explained in the engine manual, may be in the I&T manual too. Also there are marks on the crankshaft pulley to be used with a timing light once you get it to run at TDC. You shouldn't have to remove anything to see them, although they are hard to find and clean so you can use the light.

For some reason, even though I'm pretty good with a computer, I still can't figure out how to load a GD picture into a post. I gave up, and posted them in the community section under 560 timing.

Anyhow, here's the links to the 2 pics. 2 degrees on the A side of TC (or DC), or the R side (couldn't remember what it was marked, and couldn't make it out in the pic)? I assume the A is for advance, and the R is for retard?

Is there an easy way to hand crank the engine to 2 degrees? It's a real pain w/o a helper.

Basically though, once that finger is aligned with the 2 degree mark, all I need to do is align the distributor so that the rotor is sitting underneath the #1 wire?

Seems simple enough.

Thanks again in advance.
