Stuck Piston

I spent today removing the pistons from my '44 H. I got three out and the cylinders (sleeves) are in great shape and will only need to be honed. Piston #4 is stuck and the sleeve is lifting with it when I try pounding it from the bottom. Any suggestions?

Just proceed to remove it being careful not to damage the piston. You can easily crack the sleeve off when you get it out and you can buy one new sleeve but you can't buy one new piston. If you are lucky, the piston will be ok.

Jim, This method will have that piston freed up in relatively short order.
1st...Clear area of all combustibles.
2nd...Remove gas tank from tractor if it is not already off
3rd... roll tractor outside to ensure you do not get the blding on fire
4th...fill the cylinder up to almost full of DSL, add a splash of gas, set mixture on fire.
5th...Drink a cup of coffee, Coke, adult Beverage and let the fire burn itself out.
6th...If the volume of the cylinder is greater than 1/2 the stroke chances are the piston will just move on up as you drive the piston out. If the volume is less than 1/2 the stroke you may need 2,3,4,+ burnings to generate enough heat to pop the rust and let the piston turn loose.
This method will usually save the pistons and sleeves if they are not damaged from being stuck or rust pitted. If you have questions hollar at me tomorrow @.512-577-3837.If you want to.
Hope this helps.

Yup, what John said. Patience is paramount here. The only other suggestion I would make is to put your favorite penetrating oil, or a acetone/ATF mix in, about 1 cup worth, and let it sit a week before proceeding. Also, it is not a crisis if the sleeve and piston comes out together. I have had it work both ways, and have used a press if they come together.

Good luck. you can also give me a call if you want to discuss options. 4125512445. Leave a message with a number to return call if you get VM.

Remove the sleeve and piston together. You can apply some heat to the sleeve to remove the piston. Hal

Is the rod end clear of the crankshaft? If so try starting it from the top. you only need to move it 1/4 inch (or less) to free it. MTF
