6 Volt Charging System

Having trouble with battery not charging. Generator and regulator checked professionally and both work. When I put the regulator and generator back on, started the tractor and the ammeter needle showed charging momentarily, then jumped a few times and settled at zero. Ran the tractor for about 20 minutes and the needle continued to sit on zero. Should the ammeter show a charge all the time?
 
The regulator is intended to do just that. Checking the battery voltage with a charged battery, and the engine at 2/3 throttle, a meter across the bat terminals (meter with needle is best for this) the volts should read 7 to 7.4 volts. If it is the charging system is great. If down near 6.3, it is not OK. Make all components shiny to ground and proper connections at wires if no charging.

No, I did not polarize the generator. I polarized at the regulator per the instructions that came with the regulator. Is there another way?
 
With respect, and providing best practices information, The regulator includes polarizing instructions so that the system works, but you are polarizing the generator field cores, not the regulator. Jim
 
Yes and if it was charging right on the test bench, it doesn"t need to be polarized again. That magnatism hangs in there for a long time. Some of my tractors sit for months without being run & I have yet to polarize one to get it to charge.

If it was run on a test bench you should ALWAYS polarize once it is mounted on the tractor. There is a good chance that it was tested on the bench with it polarized opposite the tractor. It is just good practice to polarize a generator whenever it or the battery has been removed and reinstalled. It don't cost anything and is good insurance.
