My old 1939 owner"s manual says the studs are part number 51122-D, but doesn"t say what size.
The manual does say the nuts are 7/16".
Wait a little while for it to lighten up, and I"ll go out to the barn and try to see. My gas tank is hanging up out of the way, waiting for me to finish my H project.

The studs stick out about 2 1/4" from the tank.
The nut apears to be 7/16 fine thread, but all the 7/16 bolts I have I guess must be coarse thread, and the nut doesn't thread on.
I THINK you are right, 3", 7/16 fine thread.
Note that the nutst are castellated, for a cotter pin, so the nut will not work off the stud.
