IH planter help

I was shocked (to say the least) to open the shop door last week and see this sitting there. As you can see by the sign, my wife has covered many gift giving events in one swipe. While I know that the tractor is a 53 model, I cannot find any information on the planter. I have searched the net for pictures and information but have come up with nothing. The loop for the marker on the right side has IH stamped in it. The other has a serial number I think. I will take more pictures tonight and get the number off of the other loop as well.

This is my first antique tractor. I cannot wait to take it to a couple of shows this year and then begin the tear down this winter to make it lie I want it.

The planter might also be an A-Cub-201. You may have to compare closely to the parts catalogs to identify which it is. A lot of the planters look about alike.

I looked last night at the other loop but could not make out the numbers. Looks like I will have to knock some of the rust off and get a shine to it before I can clearly see what the numbers are. If I remember correctly I think it started with a 6. Let me get a better look at it this afternoon and see what I come up with.

As for the wife, she said this is something she has been wanting to do for some time now. She tried to buy one down the road off of a neighbor for our anniversary but he would not sell. she is a great gal and shows interest in the tractor too.

I think it's an IH 251 planter. I have seen 1 & 2 point fast hitch and 3 point.
Pictures are of my Super C with C-251 fast hitch planter with fertilizer applicator.

Parts and operator manuals are available from Binders Books.

Thanks for the help guys.

Dean, the one I have looks very similar to yours from the back view. I did manage to wire brush the loops this afternoon to find the number 62017H 2 R stamped in the left side loop. Does anyone know how the ropes need to go in order to make them correct?

Look close at the picture that shows the planter in use from the back. Mine have chains with steel balls attached on either side of the center bar that the chain goes through. The steel balls are bigger than the opening the chain goes through. The way mine operate is you reach back and move the bar till it hits the ball and raises the row marker till the weight of the other row marker takes over and drops to the ground.

You'll need to pick a reference point to set the row markers. I'm set up on 36" rows and the row marker arms are set such that I line up the radiator cap with the row mark. It makes it easy to get nice straight rows.

I saw that on yours, but if you will look at the pictre of mine it has two arms on it instead of one. Any picture that I have seen has the one bar like yours. I cannot find a picture anywhere with a search engine that shows one set up like mine.
