spark plug comparison

I just bought a tractor with Autolite 386 plugs. I'm used to Champion plugs. What Champion plug matches to a 386 plug.I'm just tryng to figure out what heat range of plugs I have.

D21 Champions are just a little hotter then the 386 Autos. I know it's going to start an argument with some but I have always had better luck with the D21s, period.

well the D16 plug is quite standard on a lot of these old tractors and thats what they came with. the D21 is hotter and not what you want to be working in the field with. every one bit--s about champion but i dont have any problem with them so thats what i buy. i believe the 386 is equal to the D16.

You don't mention what tractor you have. The plug manufacturers application listing will tell what plug you need. The Autolite 386 is a resistive plug. For most of the old Farmalls, Autolite list the 3116 plug.
I too stay away from Champion plugs. I have found that the Autolite 3116 works better in my Farmall H.

I have to agree with Charlie . The d21s work very well in all my stuff ,have them in my ih m,h,cub, have them in my 2 dcs also. NO!!!!! problems with the champions and the tractors start and run GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Id go with a NON resistor plug and the 3116 is in the heat range of 386. If you insist on a resistor plug the 388 is hotter then the 386. I have better luck with Autolite then Champion myslef.

ditto, I had an experienced IH man let me in on the autolite secret. To each his own, you may have better luck with champions, which ever works best for you, I wouldn't count either one out until you try them.

Champion is only good for a lawn mower at best. Hence why they are sold at Wal-Mart... Almost anythhing is better.

NGK is a very good plug.

(quoted from post at 03:46:06 09/17/11) Well, at least this post didn't turn into a religious war................not yet at least.

I religiously use only Autolite spark plugs.

Well, just to be different… I have irreligiously used whatever plug I could get at the time. My tractors are full time farming machines. So I have used Champion, Autolite, KLG, AC, Lodge and Bosch. No trouble with any of them, so long as the correct plug is used. They all work the same. I run my H and M on kerosene and it seems to make no difference at all whether I use a D16 or a D21. NGK is no good though, because the spanner hex on the plug is so big that it cannot be screwed into the head.
