TD340 Backhoe and 3121 Backhoe attachment

Hi all,

I"ve got a TD-340 and want to put a backhoe attachment on it. I managed to get my hands on a nice IH 3121 backhoe attachment, which I was told would fit it, but it seems awfully big...

I know the 3140 was the original backhoe attachment unit. Can someone here tell me the following:

Can a td340 handle a 3121 attachment?

What does the 3140 attachment weigh?

Anyone here have a TD-340 with any backhoe on it that would be willing to send me some pics?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Eddie

IH had mounting subframes, hydraulic connections and assorted brackets for quite a list of tractor models for the 3121. The TD-340 doesn't appear to be in the list. Since the TD-340 A was discontinued in '65 and the 3121 didn't come out until '65, is isn't surprising that they didn't bother with that combination. With 504 and 3414 in the list, it would seem that your crawler could handle it. Dedending on what subframe is on your backhoe, it might take quite a bit of fab work. I suggest you get a copy of the parts catalog for the 3121 to get a better idea what you have to work with.

Hey Jim,

thanks for the reply. From what I could tell, the 3121 was mounted on several wheeled tractors that had weight similar, or even less than, my td340.

BUT, the 3121 looks really big compared to the TD340. I'm not concerned about the fabrication, I have access to everything I'd need to do that.

Do you have a 3140? Or know someone who has the pictures of one? those would be a huge help.

When the T340 crawler came out, the company I worked for sold a new T340 w/loader and backhoe,I belive it was 3120, You sat between the Hyd. valve banks,3121 you sat over the valve bank. Mounting was same for both units. Nice unit for general work, could get into places wheel unit could not. What ever happened to it, I have no Idea.

No, I don't. I gave you about everything I know about them in my earlier post. By the way, in the very early T-340 years, IH still had an agreement with Wagner. The first T-340s would have probably had a Wagner 65 backhoe. The IH 31xx models were a bit later.

Hi all,

Thanks for the information and comments. Very helpful. Now if I can just find someone with pictures, that would be AWESOME! lol

Eddie, Found this post by accident. I have a 2606 with case 33 backhoe. I just removed the backhoe last week. Now it won't start even after going through the carb. Guess I'll pull the carb again as I just need to drive it under a tree to pull the loader off so I can work on the engine.

It has an elaborate system of mounts that also tie in to the IH 3000 loader. One inch thick plate for the mount to the axle and where it goes under the the axle and hooks to the loader. Then there is about a 2 inch thick round bars that go from that same mount on the loader and goes above the axle to where it hooks to the hoe up higher.

I wouldn't want to buy new steel to fabricate the mounts. I'm tied up for the next few days but around the middle of next week or next weekend I can get some pics and measurements.

Do you have a pick of the rear of your td340?

Eddie, you may want to check on the construction forum in red power mag. Lots of folks there know a great deal about IH dozers.

Hey BC,

Beem out of town, but got back and got your message. I'd DEFINITELY love to see some pics. That would be a huge help.

Thanks!
