ok "team"

1st of all thanks for all the continued help with my project. Now that we will not make the Sept 24th completion date (our wedding), we are going to go just a bit farther to make sure this tractor is truly awesome.

removed fuel tank, fixed distributor, removed manifolds....

next up, removed radiator.... will clean and powder coat black :) and leave out until tractor is painted. Keep cleaning it up too.

Crazy that we have gone SO far but excited about finish.

what do you think?

Powder coat the radiator?

I don't like putting any paint on a radiator as it diminishes its ability to shed heat. Any powder coat I have seen always seems to have high millage. That's "paint talk" for thick.

Moreover, the paint crew at the Farmall plant always oversprayed red onto the edges of the installed radiators. Shouldn't you overspray as well?

BTW, your shop seems so bright. Did the roof blow off? How many watts of light per square foot are you running?

I have 80 feet of strip lighting in a 20' x 25' shop but I still prefer working outside where the natural light is better.

Colby, Its coming along great, sorry its going to miss your wedding (perhaps it will be there for your first Anniversery)
I am restoring a 560 gas also! As it pertains to powder coating radiator, dont know if it can take the process, others here will know.(Heat process and thickness of coat on heat disapation)
My thoughts on mine is have rad.shop dip and remove paint, repair, then I paint fins black and tanks.neck, sides ,red. Opinion on that please.Tony

Shop has new lights, not sure watts but they are 4 tube quick starting and they ROCK. :)

Also my powder coating guy has been doing it for ever and he told me he can do it lightly. Just though after it's clean/dipped, etc at radiator shop that would be a much better finish. And we could replace it in the tractor after we get machine painted which would be nice as those areas never get painted and they are VERY dirty.

My painters, are painting back sides of all the hoods as well... so this tractor will be highly detailed WAY more so that it was from the factory. That "look" is always sharp, you know what I mean.... coil, all wires, hoses, etc will NOT have red paint on them :)

where do you guys get your starter & generators.... thinking they need to be replace with clean NEW look to match everything else. Not to mention they are both old. Thinking checking with my CaseIh store.

Black is the correct color for the radiator because it is the best for helping the radiator to dissipate heat, but I think I would forego the powder coating and use black radiator paint, or if that is not available, use some satin black enamel.

thank Rusty... are you the same Rusty Farmall that I sent my carb too in Iowa??

my painters (who restore tractors for a living, for like 20 yrs+) said same thing about black radiator painting.

if so what do you think of my tractor??

thx Chad

Yes, the same. The carburetor is done and on its way back to you. I like those 560s. That 6 cylinder engine just sounds like it could pull a house down.

The black the radiator shop uses is slightly different than regular black.

The radiator is no place for powder coat.

Most of old radiator guys I was around mixed linseed and black paint so it would come off easy when ever it had to be tanked. Easier to work on,was cleaner and didn't leave flakes in hot tank.

Here again, no need to spend a ton of money!

I rebuilt my starter that was the original one it came with.New bushings, brushes,Sandblasted starter, retaped the field poles,I even sprayed the starter on the inside with the "Glyptal"insulating paint.

You can even buy the reproduction Delco tag for the starter and generator,if you want !!!

If you want "NEW".Rebuild the stuff you got. There are people, companys who can do this.(I can do this.)

If your starter and generator are working right now, there is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON to replace them !!!!

Mike...

yes i was thinking about that also, rebuilding them myself. I have the Delco tags coming with my last parts order.

tractor is coming along nice...

Yea,it is lookin good!

Here again,I would rebuild what I have (starter/generator.) Chances are they are in good shape anyway. Some of the aftermarket starters/generators are no where NEAR as good as what you already have. Probably just brushes and bushings at the most?

I think they look really cool after they have been repainted and have the new Delco Remy tags on them ! (I am kinda "geeky" about stuff like that!lol)
