A neighbor has an IH 56 4-row planter For Sale. It does not look too bad and was used to plant beans this year. He is asking $400.00 for this. It seems a little steep even for collector purposes. What is the value of this? Anything a person should look for? It has liquid fertilizer attachment, squeeze pump, and an extra set of boxes and lids.

$400 is too high! It has no extra value to a collector. I had a great 6 roe narrow that was not out of barn for 10 years and got about $200 from the junk yard for it. It had all the goodies on it and a monitor and the cyclnder still on it.You might want to keep looking arround.Bob

Not Harvester's finest effort at planters. If it has ro-wheels on back, they will plug with moist soil at the drop of a hat.
The marker chain will cause LOTS of trouble.
Get an 800 cyclo.

Value depends... location, need, potential use? It was likely produced in the 60s, and isn't cutting edge for planter technology. However, those things are dead simple to work on, and will do a good job of planting if the ground is worked down well and reasonably level. I've got one that is 43 years old, it sets outside, and every year I plant my sweet corn with it, and use it to put 4 rows of beans in my garden. It takes 20-30 minutes to hitch up, check everything, put some oil on the marker chain mechanism and go plant. If you want to collect it, $400 may be steep. If you want to restore it, it sounds to be in good shape. If you want to use it, $400 doesn't sound too bad.

Those marker chains are really stout for their size. I still have one I removed from a 6 row 56 series planter back in the early '70s that I carry in the p.u. They will pull some pretty heavy loads & you can carry it in one hand. I've used it to pull out our stuck 5,000# forktruck more than once.
