Hey,
(Just posted this on "tractor talk"also)

To repeat.I go to tractor shows and see these tractors all hitched together and wonder: "How efficient were these things? Are they REALLY necessary?" I have seen companys of the past on YouTube who were dedicated to building these "Monstrositys"!

What were these mostly used for anyway? (DONT really know much about his subject?)

Way back in about 1962 or 1963 or so, (I would have been 9 or 10 at the time) we had a neighbor who who hitched 2 Farmall Ms one behind the other, to pull a 16 foot tandem disc. The combination DID work, but he only used it for one season. The next season he pulled that disc with an 806.

Increased capicity and the elimination of a hired man. It is rumoured that if the individual tractor would pull a 12 ft cultivator than the combined tractors would pull a 26 ft cultivator and use less fuel

Back then, large tractors were not much available, especially 100hp+ models. Large farmers used tandems tractors and even triples to do the work on large acre fields. Large ground equipment, less time in field, so not much different than today. The few people who did ganging paved the way for manufacturers to produce larger tractors that are in use today.

My fatehr mounted two M farmalls together with a sub frame on the rails of the second, and no lower bolster. He used two drivers for coordination. It was used to pull a Adams Leaning wheel 10 foot grader. It did the job! Jim.

Just like today. Everybody wants a paycheck but nobody wants to work. So the farmer hooked the hired man's tractor on behind his and drove both himself.
