H won't run

My H quit on me a week ago and now it won't stay running. I did a tune up, Check the timing, checked the fuel flow, had the carb rebuilt, and nothing seems to help. I can start it and it runs for about two seconds then dies. Could it be the governor? I looked inside and everything seemed to be operating, but I don't know how to check it.
Help!

You didn't say if its changed to 12 volt, but either way, when it dies do you still have fire at the points?

Governors do not cause that symptom.
Fuel flow is likely the cause. Check the flow out of the drain in the bottom of the carb. It must be steady and strong 1/8 to 3/16" stream of fuel into a can (for at least a minute).
There is a screen in the fitting at the carb, as well as the sediment bowl. Ignition can cause it as well, but check the fuel flow. Jim

If yours has a mag on the unit instead of the distributor, I'd be looking at the mag coil. Coils in general, whether it is distributor or mag, have a tendency to fail once they warm up inside.

In addition to checking the fuel flow, you can check for spark by taking 1 plug out, and see if you are consistently getting spark by holding it to a ground point with insulated pliers while cranking the engine over. Do that for each plug.

Also, when you say you did a tune up, points and condenser? Mag or distributor? Plug wires, are they copper core? Do you have a short in the ignition on/off wire? Sometimes it can be a simple grounded out ignition swith wire.

Some things to check.

Has the tractor been converted to 12 volts and do you have a ballast resistor between your ignition switch and coil? If you do it could be defective. Hal

sounds like you took the right steps so far - and I agree with what others have said, since you've checked the fuel flow, and did the carb, you should start looking at the ignition components.

But... it still could be a fuel problem, don't rule that out completely. Having the carb rebuilt doesn't guarantee anything.

I'm curious about one thing - you say it runs for about 2 seconds. Is that fully choked? Not choked? Or does the choke not make any difference?

Either way, do us all a favor if you fix this, come back and let us know what it was!

I haven't been on this site all that long, but so far it seems like not many people come back once they fix their problem.

I think it would be very helpful to people in the future who are searching the records for help to have the actual resolution there to some of these problems.

Get a squirt bottle and put some gas in it.Stand beside the carb and fire up the tractor, when it starts to die, give it a squirt of gas..if it keeps running you know your ignition is good and you have a fuel blockage.
The presence of fuel does not mean you have fuel flow..like Jan said, open an orfice and let the fuel flow freely for over a minute..most often with conditions you describe you will only have fuel flow for a few seconds.
