Farmall H Pistons

I am currently restoring a 1946 Farmall H and I"m going to purchase a new engine overhaul kit. Some kits say "for tractors with stepped head pistons". This tractor had flat-top aluminum gas pistons, so if I put stepped heads in it, would I need to modify anything on the cylinder head? Thanks for any help.

You need Fire crater pistons, (Stepped Head is also another way of saying that) Puting a medium height piston (one designed for 5000 ft elevation) is great for todays gasoline and will make seat of the pants more power! Jim

I recently did some work on my 1940 H. It originally was a distillate burner, and still had the distillate head. When I removed that head, I found step head pistons. The pistons and sleeves were all in fine shape, but that distillate head needed some serious work, and since I already had a spare high compression gasoline head, I elected to rebuild THAT head and install it instead of rebuilding the low compression head. The tractor has been mowing all summer and it runs great. The machine shop even planed about 0.030" off the head to get rid of a gouge. No problems with piston/head interferance.
