M Carb Flooding

Hi,
I recently began rebuilding a 49 Farmall M that was given to me. Just completely rewired it, had the alternator, starter, and carb rebuilt. I had the carb rebuilt because as soon as you would turn the fuel on it would start dumping out the drain hole on the bottom and back out the air intake. After rebuilding it does the same thing. Took it back to the shop and he had a hard time getting it to stop but eventually did (he had jerry-rigged it to a fuel pump). Put it back on the tractor turned the fuel on, and a few seconds later it was back to dumping fuel.......Any suggestions?

Could be trash under needle valve. My "SM" doing same thing when I bought it,rebuilt the carb & found the float was bent & hanging up on side of the bowl.Put a new float in & fixed the problem.

little bit of a long shot given the circumstances as described, but one thing I'd look for is to be sure the float doesn't have a hole in it.

I assume whoever rebuilt your carb would have checked this, but you never know.

If it's a tiny hole, the float could work just fine for a while, until it slowly fills with gas leading to a flooding situation (since it can't float all the way up, the needle valve never closes).

Aside from that - dirt/particles in the gas tank/fule line can randomly flow in causing intermitten problems like this.

Make sure you lines are perfectly clean, and you have a good clean screen and no junk in your sediment bowl.

Number of things come to mind. #1 bad float that fills with gas and when they do that they do not float well. #2 dirt/rust in the fuel tank that gets to the carb then gets in the float needle and so it will not seal, if that is the problem clean the tank but it should not happen if you have the sediment bowl and sediment bowl screen in line. #3 the float needle seat is not tight so it leaks by and you have a problem again. #4 cracked carb body where the float needle seat is and leaking there. #5 rubber tipped float needle that need to have a set up in it

Had similiar problems with my M. My problem was due to the float dragging on the side of the bowl. There is not a lot of clearance in there. Like was mentioned before, check for hole in float. Just a thought. jim

Maybe you need to find someone else to work on that carburetor?

I had the same thing happen to my F-20 right after I painted it. I had to tear into my carb to find the problem. Problem= The middle casting on my carb was cracked, allowing fuel to continually flow out the bottom.
