These 400?'s are sitting beside a public road and I am trying to locate the owner.
They are all appear to be the same model, it appears three may be diesel and one gas burner, is that possible?
What are they, generally what year were they made?

I'm wanting to try to purchase all three, surely I can get one good one out of them or possibly two. All sheet metal appears to be laying around.

What do I need to know about restoring one of these? Just finishing up my Grandad's Super A and looking for a new project. This is probably more than I want but ......There are 4 of them, all in the same spot.
Afraid someone may nab them and haul to the scrap yard.

What would the value of these be? I'm in Mississippi.

Thanks Guys

Bottom pic looks like a Super M to me. Anyways, offer scrap price and work from there. I might go 400 each at the most if they arent locked up.

agree on the M - the 400 is obviously a 400 - the one with the white on the side is probably either a 450 or a 350

Don't know what they're worth in your neck of the woods but that bottom one is certainly worth some effort being a Super MTA. In the top pic the nearest appears to be a 400 Diesel, and the next one looks to be a 450 gas and the other I can't tell. All four were likely built between 1954 and 1958. Sam

Has a starting tank for distillate or kero also.
Definitely a T/A housing bolted to the transmission.

Are you saying the one that has been repainted is a more valuable tractor than the 400's. I know that two of the ones with hoods have 400 on the side.
I'm afraid the sheet metal may be worse than it appears, I have no idea how many years they have been sitting here.
What kind of cost difference is there to restoring a diesel compared to a gas burner?

If they are for sale, what should I look for on any one of them other than the obvious things, something that would significantly affect restoration cost?
I know that all of them are a costly and labor intensive project.
Seems to me the biggest question is transmission condition. I know a motor is going to be a rebuild but transmission parts add up quickly.

Tires, for one, are very expensive. And anything sitting out in the sun for more than a couple years will probably need all new tires.

If you're idea is to make a profit on the tractors, there are better ways to invest your money (including sticking it in the mattress!)

You best profit potential would probably come from buying them as a lot with a lucky lowball offer, and turning around and selling them individually, as is, to other's who want to restore them. (or part them out)

If you're doing it for your own interest in owning them, then that's different.

But I'm afraid each one is just too different to use them all for parts to build one perfect tractor.

Definitely a 400D and a SMTA. I won't guess about the others. If the tags are there you should be able to read the impressed numbers and look them up on this site.

I am commenting on this post because that school bus is about the right age for a 4-53 Detroit Diesel. I'll bet that alot of them were sold in the rural areas of the south. If it does have a DD, it will probably be a four valve 140 hp. Might have a 180 hp (?) turbo motor. I would have popped the hood on that before shooting the pictures.

I would buy the SMTA just because it is a dist/kero tractor. That was getting pretty rare in 1954.

The diesels are 3 to 4 times more expensive to rebuild than the gas tractors.

I think any one of them is worth what it weighs. I didn't see a covered exhaust on any of them.
