bought it at just over scrap price
PO was actually using it.
ran rough
got it home and re-timed the mag and rotor.(rotor gear was off some)
now ran pretty good, smoked some
NO unusual engine noises, oil was dirty but clear, no water
tore it down to find the oiling problem, figured stuck rings,
lots of evidence it sat a long time, rust scars on the valve train, etc
started pulling pistons, no ridge to speak of.
pulled 4 then 3, sleeves looked pretty good, rings free
couldn't get #2 out....pulled #1 and went back to #2.
thought the oil ring was hanging up, so pushed it back down and took off the oil ring from below, still no go.
got it up JUST far enough to pull the wrist pin, piston came right out,
took the rod out from the bottom, bent badly.
It actually notched the sleeve, when the PO was running it.
piston, pin, pin bushing, and rod bearing are all fine.
remember, engine ran fine with no noises. go figure
Sleeve notch is 1 inch high putting it above the oil ring on the downstroke,
hence the smoke. no block damage or water leaks
(I'll be able to check better when I get the sleeve out)

so, anybody got one good rod they can spare for a fair price?

Probably a hydraulic lock. My son's car was purchased from a man who changed the intake then drove it through a deep flooded intersection.
Rod through block.
It was probably pull started with water in the cylinder. Ouch. Jim

Ouch. My WD-9's #1 piston looked about like your rod and the PO said it ran fine. He said it would slobber a bit when cold, but after a couple minutes would smooth right out with little to no smoke. The top compression ring came out in MANY pieces and there was a dime size hole out of the side of the piston!

I agree it was probably hydro-lock and then tried to pull start, I saw that happen on a Oliver 1855 Deisel once. Just think of the force required to do that to a rod !

update
got the sleeve out
pic so you can see the rod notch better
(small divot is from me getting the piston out)
1 inch of muck in the water jacket.
almost afraid to clean it out.....no leaks right now
