Oh boy, half way through the hayride yesterday the Regular quit on me. It just shut down like ignition, but after a minute or two gas was running out the carb and even the governor tube! Shut off the gas but still won t even fire, not even pull starting. I haven t had a chance to investigate the trouble yet, but I think I have carb and Mag problems both ! lol Had to walk back to the farm and get the SH to finish the ride. Damn that old SH is a reliable unit, never causes me ANY trouble, and it is the hardest worked tractor I have.

Your needle valve may have dirt under it, not allowing the float to shutoff the gas flow. Pull off a plug wire and hold it away from the plug while you have a helper crank over the engine to see if there's good fire to your plugs. Hal

Yep, I just had a buddy stop by, so we held a plug wire about a 1/4 from the block while I cranked about 10 revs, and no spark....Also the carb is still flooding, so I do have both carb and mag trouble simultainously ! lol

Mike, I have had way more problems with floats than mags! But you could have lost your mag coil or condensor. Than you flooded it! As hal said dirt in needle or float stuck. The new gas eats the finish right off the floats, than there don't work. I have changed most of my Regular's over to brass floats. Aldersen tractor makes them. oldiron29

Yes, the mag may be a little weak, but 0.250 is a pretty big gap. Most plugs use 0.030. Harbor Freight has a device (less than $20) to tell when a plug is firing. It may allow you to concentrate on the carb.

Yeah, you might be holding the plug wire too far away from the block.

I always take a known good spark plug and install it on the wire, then hold the plug up against a good ground in the tractor to check for fire. Then you're SURE that the gap isn't too far.

Yeah, I thought of that too...but have read on here that a good Mag can jump a 1/2 inch gap too. I am thinking I will make a flat bar about 1 foot long, drill and tap 4 holes to mount the plugs into, and then weld a clamp on one end to attach to the tractor frame or other suitable spot. Then I can turn the engine and watch all 4 plugs for spark. I wonder if you can turn the belt pulley with the plugs out to spin the engine? Hard to see from out front cranking, or I will need another person maybe..

The brass float sure seems like good idea. I also saw them at Fordson House I think. I had the carb apart before just to clean it up, I should have put in brass at that time I guess, Oh well, pretty simple to work on these !

You can crank using the belt by using your belt pulley on your Super H. Be careful around that belt when its running. That mag should fire when the impulse coupling snaps. Clean the points until they're shiny then see if you have fire to your plug. Hal

Since it happened that quickly, I would say you either have a mag points issue, the mag trip is stuck , or the mag cap is not making contact.
