Do H and M starters interchange?

(quoted from post at 13:24:43 09/03/11) I think the H and M use the same starter motor but does anyone know for sure? Thanks!

Yes they do use the same starter, but the "clocking" is different to get the battery cable post in the correct position.

(quoted from post at 13:34:07 09/03/11) So is it difficult to make it work or might it just need a different cable?

No, it is not difficult to make it work, but you do need to partially dis-assemble the starter. In a pinch, it might work just fine without doing anything. It all depends on the length of the battery cable you have now.

This would qualify as a pinch and not a permanant situation. I have the tractor stored in the river bottoms and I am concerned about flooding due to this storm on the gulf coast and my M starter is bad. I want my dad to be able to move the tractor by himself in a hurry without having anyone else to help or even another tractor to drag. My H is on higher ground and I thought I could swap the starters so until I had time to fix or get another one.

thanks!

Situations like the one you describe is why I make sure I've got a crank handle available for all my old tractors. Comes in real handy when the battery is dead or starter locks up, or even just adjusting valves or setting timing. Might be too late to help ya with the current problem but would be a good idea for next time, they can be bought on ebay for $20-30

Not trying to be critical but he said he wanted his father to be able to start the tractor if needed. If his father is very old hand cranking may be out of the question. Otherwise, a good answer.

(quoted from post at 18:08:30 09/03/11) Gas M and all but real late H tractors use the same starter number.

Right on the money. DelcoRemy number 1107448. They are exactly the same starter except for the H with serial number 391538 and above which uses starter number 1108016.

I do have a hand crank for it but since it was rebuilt, it has been too tight to crank. Crank was great for turning the motor over when rebuilding and timing valves though.

Appreciate the advice guys!

yes they are the same. Just change them and your dad will be able to start and move your tractor.

Bob

When you get the starter moved over then move the tractor to high ground yourself, and your father won't have to worry about it. Of course if your father is a tractor nut and is looking for an excuse to go "play...."

(quoted from post at 21:00:03 09/03/11) I haven't seen anyone have much luck cranking anything larger than a C with any luck. Too dangerous for me.

I've never gotten a chance to crank start an M, but I crank my H pretty often just for kicks. If the tractor is tuned properly and you follow the right procedure, it should start pretty easily with little danger to the cranker.

haha I think my wife would argue that I need to thin down my hobbies a bit. But I always crank the tractors at shows, I usually have the batt disconnected so people won't mess with them, and its easier to crank start them than to hook the battery back up for a minute. Also impresses the crowds.

I kick start my electric start dirt bike too

Just to follow up, the starters are in fact exactly the same, including the position of the battery post.

Now my dad can move it if he needs to but can leave it in the shed if the river doesn't get up. Since I live two hours away, I can't get there at a moments notice to help pull stuff around.

I also wanted to double check that the starter on the M was the problem so putting a known good one on it solves that problem.

Plus,it would have to sit outside in the neighbors lawn until the storm passes if we moved it now.

Hope folks get the rain they need but the rivers keep in their banks with this one.
