300 RC thermostat housing

I am trying to replace the thermostat and have removed the entire housing from the tractor as I needed to be replacing the small hose connecting the housing to the water pump as well. My problem is that one of the two long bolts connecting the top of the housing to the bottom won't budge. I thought about heating the housing but am unsure if this is a good idea. Any ideas on what to do would be appreciated.

Heating it will not hurt the cast iron (other than the paint. I would heat the head of the bolt red hot (not melted!!!) and keep it that way for 10 seconds. Then let it cool for 30 minutes till pretty cold. this breaks the corrosion bond and usually lets the bolt turn. Tighten and loosen on it, not just loosen. It is mush easier to remove it if the shank is still on it. Taking a dremel or cutoff wheel to the head, then separating the halves of the housing will let you get to the threaded part easily. Heating the casting can then be done if needed. Jim

Thank you for the advice, sir. I was considering cutting off the head of the bolt to allow me to try to separate the halves. I wanted to make sure experienced guys thought heat was ok on these pieces and didn't cause some problem. Do you think I should cut off the bolts head and go from there right off? Or try the heat route first? Thanks again.

Heat the bolt head red one time and let it cool. If it still wants to twist off, stop and cut it off as the ease of removal is hundreds of times better with some shank to grip with a vise or Visegrips. Jim
