350 pto slipping and noise

I just bought an IH 350 Utility tractor with brush hog. When the PTO is not engaged it makes a whining noise. When it is engaged and you go to cut any grass the grass stops the mower as if you had a worn out clutch or it is out of adjustment. This is a live PTO, is there a way to adjust it?
Thanks in advance.

You bet!

On the upper right side of the PTO housing, there is a little cover (if it's still there) over a couple of screws with locknuts. Each of these screws adjusts a PTO band. One band makes the PTO go, and the other makes it stop. The trick is to adjust the bands so that one is tight when the PTO handle is up, the other is tight when the handle is down, and both are never tight at the same time.

For the exact procedure, check the archives here or refer to a manual.

If you find that one or more bands are worn out, make sure you're sitting down next to a bottle of oxygen before you ask about the price of a replacement.

There are adjustments for it but to explain them on here would be hard since in the manual it takes something like 2 pages. So in the long run your best bet is go and buy an I-T IH-10 manual and it will have the info you need to fix your problem plus info for later problems

The whine in off position if pretty much par for the course on that planetery pto. Far as adjustment, that has been covered, but you need to be able to turn the shaft by hand with a short punch inserted in shaft when lever is in middle position, dots lined up on lock and quadrant. Also, I have switched the bands on a few years ago as the brake band rarely wears as much as engagement band. Takes a little doing to get apart with out the right tools.

Pete:

I'm glad to hear that the whine in the off position is normal. I had adjusted mine meticulously by the book, and the whine was an unpleasant surprise. I haven't used the PTO since the adjustment, as I figured I'd somehow screwed it up and would have to revisit the adjustment procedure sometime. But maybe it's O.K. after all.
