Wedge ring / Farmall 544

Got the bell housing split from the tractor, just like Pete said, it does come right apart, IT manual makes it sound complicated. In removing the PTO driven gear, there is a bolt, washer, and "wedge ring". Does anyone know the secret to removing the wedge ring? Thanks!
 
First off remove the snap ring from behind the rear ball bearing, remove bolt and washer, put some well fitting wood block behind gear, between gear and housing and then drive the shaft out of gear. That ring can really be tight and takes some good wacks. Reason they went to the wedge ring is so many older models from MTA through 300 to 560 would ruin the gear and shaft from getting loose. Never saw a loose one on this style but they make it much more difficult to work on.
