How to run hyd pump off of crank pulley?

I currently have my loader on a stage II SM and would like to free that tractor up. I'm planning to move the loader to a regular M.

I have a PTO driven hydraulic pump sitting around and was toying with the idea of building a bearing mounted shaft with PTO splines and running the pump off of the front of the crankshaft. I believe I would need some reduction to bring the pump speed down closer to it's 540 rpm intended operating speed.

I'm wondering if someone else has done something similar. Not sure if it would be better to use a wide belt or to use a chain to drive it. I would need some way to add a pulley or gear on the front of the crankshaft.

Any ideas?

Yes that was a common practice.Chain drive is best as a belt would slip.My SuperM had that setup when I purchased it.the hole inthe framerail and the scarring from the chain are still visible.look closely at the front framerail to see the hole.

I see that extra hole there. I was thinking more of mounting it directly underneath as my loader works with a narrow front.

Yes, that was a very common way to get live hydraulics for the loader.

like Delta says a chain drive is best. The pump speed will need to be reduced.

The 540 Prince pump is also sold as a 1000 RPM pump. Prince just changes the splines. The pumps are also sold with different width gears for different displacements. Chances are that you have a small displacement unit. I wouldn't worry about overspeed.

The biggest pulley or sprocket that will fit is 7". 6" or 6.5" is easier to fit. I would stay away from a roller chain due to oiling requirements in a dusty atmosphere. Use a Gilmer tooth belt or two groove pulley.

Thanks for the photos!

I had not thought of using a taper lock. That seems like the perfect solution.

I believe the pump that I have is somewhere in the middle. I'll have to look up the number again.

Not if you put a 4" pulley on the crank and about a 7" on the pump.

That will slow it down by about 3 times from the engine rpm. So if the engine is wide open at 1800 rpm the pump would turn 600.

You are going to run the pump backwards better check the pump to see if it will operate backwards if you mount it out the front hooked to the crank.

If you are in Wisconsin, Jackels had a tractor with a chain driven live pump on it. Might be easier than making yours work.

That's a good point.
The pump drive is hollow all the way through so I should be able to slide it on "backwards" in order to get the correct rotation.

I do show up in Wisconsin occasionally, but home base is a long way from there!

Last week I was in chicago, moline, columbus and cincinnati.

Sorry, I never looked at who the OP was when I said that.
