Recently a cub came up for sale in our area, I don't know much about them. I have a real basic IH book that says its an L head. Is that what we used to call a flat head? is it an IH engine? Does it have sleeves? Live hydraulics or none? Thanks in advance, Russ

the valves are located in the block. it is a sleeveless i-h engine, and many did have a live pump.

Their oil pump at times loses it oil pressure and you have to split the tractor to get to the pump. I would check it over very close and run it. Here's a 1951 and it had hydraulics. Hal

Yes, same as a flathead.

They have a whooping 10hp, later models more with more rpm and speed. For it's 10hp it could do quite a bit of work. Somewhat limited on gear selections , 1'st gear for mower is sometimes too fast.

If it hasn t been run for some time you always need to prime the oil pump the pump drives off the cam and the pickup tube runs a long way at the left rear corner of the block you will find an allen plug remove it and fill the oil gallery befor starting

there good little tractors, 60 ci ih engine, it does not have sleeves, if either has live hydraulics or none at all, on the early ones it was optional you'll have to look under the gas tank to see if the hydraulic box is there, i have a '49, it runs a ih 42" mower all summer long, and makes a modern riding mower look like a pile of junk, the cut is that much better, and no remowing the center stripe modern riders leave in long grass, it has the grader/ snow blade and works well in the winter, also has a 1 bottom plow too it works but i havent got to play with that much, it will run out of horsepower if you really push it in hood high weeds ect but if you make 2 passes it works fine, right now its pulling my feed trailer every day with a full tank of water on it trailer weighs about 2500 lbs, and the cub pulls it in second gear, [ its mostly flat where my pens are]

A small Continental flathead was used as a power units on equipment such IH combines. The Cub C60 was used to power balers. So, the two are commonly confused.
