Yea,I watched some older fella start a Field Marshall like that on Youtube! He made quite a show of it too!

Certain older aircraft start like that,as well !!!

If you think that's a procedure you should try hand cranking one. It doesn't leave a whole lot of room for error. Sam

Watch the original Flight of the Phoenix. When they go to fly out of the desert, Jimmy Stewart uses an explosive shell to start the plane's engine.

I have a Series 3 Field Marshall with the shotgun shell starter. It's a non-runner. But if it did run, I wouldn't use the that system. Later models of that tractor had electric start. They all have crank starting using a compression release.

The gun powder is a special mix that has specific burning characteristics. You just can't go to Walmart to get the shells.

There is a considerable hazard that a misfire can occur. The tube leading to the engine cylinder can load up with a partially burned load. The next start may have something like a double load.

You can own my Field Marshall if interested.

When I was in the Air Force in the 60's working on KC-135's they modified them to use a shotgun starter. The cartridge was about the size of a gallon can, pretty sucessful system. Never have seen one on a tractor. ED PS,Big time smoke.

It was loosely based on a plane (Lady Be Good) that got lost in the dessert in 1943 after returning from a bombing run over Naples Italy. However they did not resurrect the plane and fly it out. In 1958 the wreckage was found and later all but one of the crew. Some had gotten as far as 40 miles from the plane if I remember correctly.
