My son bought a 48 H at an estate sale. It had sat in a barn for the last 10 yrs or so. He has a 46 H, the question is, How can you tell if it is positive or neg ground. Thanks in advance for your help....gobble

Positive ground from factory -- leave it that way unless it has an alternator. Otherwise the points in the voltage regulator may/will have accelerated wear.

CNKS is correct if it has not been modified!
If it has an alternator, it is very likley negative ground.
If it has been set up positive ground (normal) the battery terminals will be positioned for larger Positive goint to the ground cable and yhe smaller negative connections to the starter switch.
Carefull looking at the terminals can give a clear impression of the facts.
If it is an alternator do not hook it up backwards, it will ruin the alt and smoke will come out!

Don't forget, if it has the original generator system you have to repolarize it anyhow and this will make it whatever ground you choose. (I would stick with positive)
