Lube in SC fan shaft

Sad to say I never realized the fan shaft on a Super C was oil lubed. Disassembled, cleaned, resealed. Now what goes in it and how much? I assume you fill in the horiz. position since the shaft is not sealed.

I believe it's filled with engine oil, fill with the hole at the top, rotate hole to the bottom and allow to drain. I think there should be a standpipe inside which will allow it to drain to the correct level. Sam

I have two (2)Sc's that do not have oil lubed fan bearings. Each are sealed. Some SC's were, some weren't. I would imagine that Farmall found that 99% of the owners didn't provide any more maintenance to the oil lubed units than they did for other items of the tractor, so they went to sealed units. For example; did you ever know one original owner that changed the oil in the front steering gear assembly? I believe nearly ever SC still running still has the original oil, if any oil, and has a plugged vent for that assembly as most owners don't even know there is a vent located there that must be maintained open.

I used heavy 90 wt oil and I believe that is what is recommended in the shop manual. The shaft has a built in pump that circulates the oil along the shaft while turning and a circular reservoir to hold the excess oil. If you let it run without lube it will burn out quickly (don't ask me how I know). Also be very careful to seal the reservoir end or the oil will spin out when turning. Check it after you have it assembled. If oil spins out when running you do not have it sealed.

The manual says to use motor oil. I doubt that much 90 weight would get to the bearing unless it was very hot.
