Tel-A-depth

To: CNKS

A week ago I posted a? whether the tel-a-depth valve was worth trying to save,or should I try a different valve. You advised to try saving and adjusting the tel-a-depth. Spent 2 weekends with it. Just to let you let it works well now! Thanx for the encouragment!

You are welcome. The tel-a-depth is not as good as whatever they call the modern version today but it beats everything else IH had at that time.

We (Cessna) were developing the next generation of draft control and 3 point for IH and it worked great. But, for whatever reason, they decided to not buy it. I had the opportunity to operate the 460U that had the new system on it a few years later (1965) and you wouldn't believe it, but that 460 would easily pull a 4x16" semi-mounted plow. At that time Oliver was interested in using some of the technology in that system and we ran it side by side with a 1650 Oliver which has about 12-14 more HP. The Oliver engineers couldn't believe their eyes. I was in the meeting in Charles City with Cessna project engineer Marvin Darling when Oliver first expressed interest in it, and although I was not directly connected with the project, I stayed interested in it. Too bad IH didn't go with it... they would have been a step ahead of everyone else.

IH Fan -- Interesting -- IH was usually slow in adapting newer items, one reason for their eventual downfall. None the less, tel-a-depth was better than its predecessors.

Not sure where that 460U disappeared to. Marvin had it at his farm NE of Burrton, KS when he passed away. His wife had an auction and sold it even though it still belonged to Cessna. Cessna did not want to upset her any more, so they just wrote it off.... it had long out lived it's usefulness for the company anyway.
