Front and Back Main Seals in MTA Diesel

My mechanic is finally puting my MTA Diesel back together after about a year of sitting. We are trying to get it ready for a show this Friday. The only seals for the crankshaft we can find in all the boxes of parts I purchased were made of felt. By looking at the case IH parts website it appears that these engines may have had felt seals early on and then replaced with rubber type lip seals. When we took the engine down it had the rubber seal type. Do I need to find and go back with the later rubber lip seal type and am I correct in that it is either or and not both types of seals?

The newer ones used the rubber seal. The old ones with the felt seal have a spiral cut into the crank to take oil back to the engine. Usually the rubber ones went into a heavy duty seal retainer where the felt ones used a white metal retainer. If your crank doesn't have a spiral you better track down a rubber one or I think you will have problems.
